How Norway Built a Golden Generation Beyond Haaland
Investment in artificial pitches and a coaching revolution have turned Norway into a World Cup force, with 17 of their 26 players in Europe's top leagues.

Norway have emerged as a powerhouse at the World Cup, with a squad that goes beyond the star power of Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard. A deep investment in infrastructure and coaching has produced a golden generation, exemplified by 17 of their 26-man squad playing in Europe's top four leagues.
The Scandinavian nation, with a population similar to Scotland, has transformed its football fortunes through two decades of planning. The National Team School (NTS), established in 2013, has been central to developing technically gifted players, while a wave of artificial pitches has allowed year-round training.
The Artificial Pitch Revolution
Since 2000, Norway has invested heavily in artificial turf, building 539 new pitches between 2016 and 2025 and renovating 586 more. This shift turned football from a summer-only sport into a year-round activity, enabling consistent technical development even during harsh winters.
Hakon Grottland, head of player development at the Norwegian Football Federation, noted that the predictable surfaces have encouraged a more technical style, moving away from the defensive, workmanlike approach of the 1990s. However, he cautioned that the focus on attacking players has led to a shortage of defenders.
- 539 artificial pitches built between 2016 and 2025, with 586 renovated.
- National Team School (NTS) launched in 2013 to mentor elite youth.
- 17 of 26 World Cup squad members play in Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga, or Serie A.
- Norway reached the quarter-finals after beating Ivory Coast and Brazil.
- Country's oil wealth has supported significant football investment.
Norway's golden generation now faces England in the quarter-finals on Saturday, a testament to a long-term strategy that has turned the nation into a football force beyond its winter sports heritage.
