Pickford set to become England's most capped World Cup player
Jordan Pickford will make his 18th World Cup appearance against Norway, surpassing Peter Shilton's record.

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford will set a new national record when he faces Norway in the World Cup quarter-final in Miami, making his 18th tournament appearance to eclipse Peter Shilton's previous mark of 17.
The 32-year-old Everton keeper's latest milestone follows a standout performance in England's 3-2 last-16 win against Mexico at the Azteca, where his saves helped secure victory. Pickford will win his 90th international cap in what will be his fifth major tournament.
Consistent numbers
Pickford's domestic form has been equally impressive. In the last two Premier League seasons, his 23 clean sheets rank second only to Arsenal's David Raya (32), despite playing for a mid-table side. For England, he has kept 44 clean sheets in 89 appearances, conceding 59 goals while making only two errors leading to goals, according to Opta.
Underappreciated?
Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes Pickford has been undervalued. "I think he has been under-appreciated for Everton and England when you look at the numbers he's posting, the games he is playing and the number of clean sheets he has," Robinson told BBC Sport.
- Pickford is second in Premier League clean sheets over the past two seasons (23), behind David Raya (32).
- He has 44 clean sheets in 89 England appearances, with only two errors leading to goals.
- His 18th World Cup appearance will break Peter Shilton's record of 17.
- Pickford made his England debut in November 2017 against Germany at Wembley.
Robinson added: "He's an excellent shot-stopper, his distribution is second to none. He's matured as a person and a professional." Pickford's long distribution was a key weapon in the Mexico win, directly setting up a goal.
What's next
Pickford will aim to extend his record further when England face Norway in Miami for a place in the semi-finals. The match marks another chapter in his remarkable journey from Sunderland academy graduate to England's most-capped World Cup goalkeeper.
