England face Norway in Miami heat as WBGT nears danger threshold
England's World Cup quarter-final against Norway could be played in conditions deemed too dangerous by players' union.

England will play their World Cup quarter-final against Norway on Saturday at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, where temperatures are forecast to reach 33°C (91°F) but feel like 41°C (106°F) with humidity. The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT), a measure of heat stress, is expected to be between 28–30°C, exceeding the threshold of 28°C at which global players' union Fifpro recommends matches be delayed or postponed.
The Three Lions have been largely protected from extreme heat during the tournament, playing three matches indoors in air-conditioned venues and three outdoors in cooler, damper conditions. Their warmest outdoor game was against Panama in 25°C with overcast skies.
Norway, in contrast, have played five of their six matches outdoors, including a 2–1 win over Brazil in New Jersey while an extreme heat warning was in effect. Their only indoor match was a last-32 victory over Ivory Coast in Dallas.
Conditions exceed safety guidelines
The US National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the Miami area, warning of a hazardous heat threat. The Hard Rock Stadium has a fixed roof that reduces airflow, making conditions on the pitch even more oppressive. With thunderstorms possible near kick-off, there is uncertainty over how the heat will affect play.
- Air temperature expected around 33°C but feels like 41°C with humidity.
- WBGT forecast between 28–30°C at kick-off.
- Fifpro guidelines state matches should not be played above 28°C WBGT.
- Stadium roof is fixed, limiting ventilation.
With England unused to such conditions and Norway battle-hardened from similar heat, the climate could be a decisive factor in the quarter-final. The match kicks off at 22:00 BST, and both teams will need to manage player safety carefully.
