Trump says USA will bid 'immediately' to host another World Cup

President Donald Trump has said the United States will "immediately" request to host another FIFA World Cup after the 2026 tournament set an all-time attendance record. Speaking to FOX Sports, Trump said: "Based on the numbers, we will be requesting it again immediately."

The 2026 World Cup was co-hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada, and attracted 6,810,966 fans — the highest attendance in the tournament's history. The final, played at New York New Jersey Stadium, saw Spain defeat Argentina 1-0.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino stood alongside Trump in the aftermath and praised the event. "The American dream, Mr. President, came to reality," Infantino said. "We united the world."

A record-breaking tournament

The 2026 edition spanned 104 matches across six weeks, with stadiums from Seattle to Miami and Monterrey to Toronto. Despite pre-tournament concerns about playing surfaces and logistics, organizers reported matches played at nearly 100 percent capacity with no major off-pitch incidents.

Future World Cup hosts

The next World Cup in 2030 will be held primarily in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, with Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay also staging matches to mark the tournament's 100th anniversary. The 2034 edition has already been awarded to Saudi Arabia.

Trump's comments suggest the USA may pursue the 2038 World Cup, the next edition not yet allocated. "We have to do this again, and we have to do it while I'm around," Trump said, addressing Infantino directly.
