Why Ivory Coast's badge carries three stars despite no World Cup wins
The Elephants' three stars represent their Africa Cup of Nations triumphs, not World Cup victories.

Ivory Coast's national team badge features three stars above the elephant crest, a detail that has puzzled many fans unfamiliar with African football traditions. Unlike major footballing nations such as Brazil or Germany, where stars indicate World Cup titles, the Elephants' stars represent their three Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victories.
While FIFA permits World Cup winners to display stars on their kits, several African nations have adopted the practice to honour continental success. Ivory Coast earned its first star by winning AFCON in 1992, added a second in 2015, and secured a third in 2023. Egypt, the most successful AFCON nation with seven titles, also displays stars for its continental wins.
AFCON glory and World Cup ambitions
Ivory Coast's current squad is competing at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Drawn in Group E alongside Germany, Curacao, and Ecuador, the Elephants opened their campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador, courtesy of a 90th-minute winner from Amad Diallo. The team has never advanced beyond the group stage in their previous appearances, having last qualified in 2014.
- Three AFCON titles: 1992, 2015, 2023
- Stars on kit represent continental success, not World Cup wins
- Other African nations like Egypt also use stars for AFCON titles
- Ivory Coast currently in Group E of the 2026 World Cup
Ivory Coast will face Germany on June 20 and Curacao on June 25 as they attempt to reach the knockout rounds for the first time. The team's blend of experienced stars and emerging talents, including Manchester United's Amad Diallo, will be key to their hopes of making history.
