European teams dominate World Cup quarter-finals
Six of the eight quarter-finalists are from Europe, a record for a non-European World Cup.

Europe has placed six teams in the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in a tournament held outside the continent, matching a mark set in 1994. The eight remaining sides include Belgium, England, France, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, Argentina, and Morocco.
Historically, European nations have struggled in World Cups hosted outside Europe, winning only twice: Spain in 2010 and Germany in 2014. However, the current crop has overcome early concerns about adapting to North American conditions.
Key facts
- Six European teams reached the quarter-finals: Belgium, England, France, Norway, Spain, and Switzerland.
- Only two European teams have won a World Cup outside Europe: Spain (2010) and Germany (2014).
- Switzerland defeated Colombia on penalties to advance for the first time since 1954.
- England overcame altitude and a hostile crowd at the Azteca to beat Mexico in the last 16.
- Belgium brushed aside co-hosts USA and will face Spain in the quarter-finals.
European sides started slowly, with seven of the first ten failing to win their opening group match. But they improved as the tournament progressed, eventually posting 17 wins, 12 draws and seven losses against non-European opposition in the group stage.
The quarter-final line-up sets up a potential all-European semi-final, with Spain and Belgium meeting on one side of the draw. The winner will face either Argentina or Morocco, the only non-European teams left in the competition.
