Two riders have died after separate accidents at British eventing competitions on Saturday, the sport's governing body has confirmed. Sophie Fouracre, 34, and Kerry Donoghue, 42, were both fatally injured during cross-country phases at venues in Oxfordshire and Cumbria.

Fouracre was riding Rhubarbsfox Britannia at Swalcliffe Park in Oxfordshire when the accident occurred. Hours later, Donoghue died while riding Carneyhaugh Rua at an event in Penrith, Cumbria. Medical teams at both venues responded immediately and provided emergency treatment, but neither rider could be saved.

What happened

Both incidents took place during the cross-country phase, one of the three disciplines that make up eventing alongside dressage and showjumping. British Eventing initially issued statements on Saturday describing "serious incidents" at the two meetings, and both events were abandoned for the remainder of the weekend.

Both horses were examined and found to be uninjured. Reviews of the two accidents are now under way.

Reaction and context

British Eventing chief executive Rosie Williams said the community was "heartbroken" and extended the organisation's deepest condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of both riders. She also thanked organisers, doctors, paramedics, veterinary teams, officials and emergency services at both events for their professionalism and care, adding that the loss of two members of the eventing family on the same day was "almost beyond words".

The mental health charity Riders Minds responded to what it called desperately sad news by offering immediate support to members of the eventing community.

Fatalities in eventing are rare, but the sport has been affected by several in recent years. Professional eventer Georgie Campbell died in May 2024 after her horse fell on her at the Bicton International Horse Trials in Devon, and British rider Sarah Yorke, 37, suffered a fatal accident during the cross-country phase of the Aston-le-Walls horse trials last August. In 2019, 15-year-old rider Iona Sclater died during a training session at home.

With reviews of Saturday's accidents under way, British Eventing said the sadness of the events would be felt profoundly across the sport for some time to come.
