Tua Tagovailoa edges Michael Penix Jr in Falcons quarterback battle
Atlanta's new coaching staff must weigh short-term stability against draft pedigree as Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr compete to start.

Atlanta Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski is weighing one of the most consequential calls of his first season in charge, with Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr competing to be named the team's starting quarterback. The decision will shape an offense that heads into Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Tagovailoa arrived in Atlanta after being released by the Miami Dolphins, who absorbed a $99 million dead-money cap hit to move on. Across 78 games in Miami he posted a passer rating of 96.4, throwing for 18,166 yards, 120 touchdowns and 59 interceptions. His durability has been a persistent question, with four documented concussions between 2019 and 2024.
The Falcons also have an in-house option in Penix Jr, the eighth overall pick in the 2024 draft. As a rookie he threw for 775 yards and three touchdowns in three starts after taking over from Kirk Cousins in December, but his development stalled when he tore the MCL and ACL in his left knee in 2025. Cousins was subsequently released and is now with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Why the call is not straightforward
NBC Sports NFL insider Mike Florio argued on Pro Football Talk that the institutional pull in these situations usually favours the quarterback the current regime acquired. He pointed out that the decision-makers who drafted Penix Jr are no longer in the building, while Tagovailoa was brought in by the group now running the team — Matt Ryan, Ian Cunningham and Stefanski.
- Tagovailoa was signed by Atlanta's current regime, while Penix Jr was drafted under previous leadership
- Penix Jr showed promise as a rookie with 775 passing yards and three touchdowns in three starts
- A torn MCL and ACL in 2025 interrupted his development and raised injury concerns
- Both quarterbacks carry significant medical questions, leaving Atlanta with two high-upside but high-risk options
Florio suggested that if the competition is close, the preference may lean towards Tagovailoa unless ownership intervenes. With training camp approaching, Stefanski and his staff are expected to prioritise short-term stability over draft status when naming a starter for the opener against Pittsburgh, a choice that will set the tone for the Falcons' season.
