Statistical strengths of World Cup quarter-finalists revealed
Opta data highlights key advantages for France, Spain, Morocco, Belgium and Norway ahead of knockouts.

With the World Cup quarter-finals approaching, statistical analysis from Opta has identified a unique strength for each of the eight remaining teams. France, Spain, Morocco, Belgium and Norway all feature in the data, which was published by the Guardian.
Key statistical advantages
France boast the most productive ball carriers of any side. Nine players have recorded at least four runs of five metres or more that ended in either a shot or a chance created, including Ousmane Dembélé, Kylian Mbappé and Michael Olise.
Morocco have logged the most sprints of any quarter-finalist, and their sprint-per-distance ratio is the highest in the tournament. This suggests they have covered ground at the greatest intensity, and playing two matches in air-conditioned stadiums may have aided their physical output.
Spain’s average possession is similar to the level they achieved at Euro 2012, and they have conceded the lowest expected goals (xG) total of any team. Additionally, they lead the competition in high turnovers – sequences started within 40 metres of the opponent’s goal – with 50 such instances.
Belgium are the leaders in converting high turnovers into shots, with 15 attempts resulting from those situations. They have scored four goals from high turnovers, also the best mark among the remaining teams.
Norway have prioritized shot quality over quantity, with an average expected goals per shot of 0.17. Despite playing an extra match, they have taken only four more shots than Cape Verde.
- France: nine players with at least four productive carries (run of 5m+ ending in shot or chance)
- Morocco: highest sprint total and sprint-to-distance ratio in the tournament
- Spain: highest possession percentage and lowest xG conceded; 50 high turnovers
- Belgium: 15 high-turnover shots and four goals from those scenarios (most)
- Norway: highest expected goals per shot (0.17), quality over quantity
The data underlines the contrasting styles of the eight quarter-finalists. As the knockout rounds progress, opponents will need to nullify these specific strengths to advance.
