UEFA tells VARs to avoid using monitors for diving detection

UEFA has instructed its video assistant referees to refrain from using pitchside monitors to detect diving, diverging from the protocols used at the World Cup, where simulation was added to VAR's remit.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) introduced simulation as a reviewable offence this summer, allowing VAR to recommend yellow or red card changes in cases of mistaken identity. However, UEFA confirmed it will only apply the rule in European competitions for correcting clear errors in player identification.

World Cup precedents

The most high-profile example of the new protocol occurred during the World Cup quarter-final between Argentina and Switzerland. Swiss striker Breel Embolo was sent off after VAR determined he had dived to win a penalty, overturning a yellow card given to Argentina's Leandro Paredes. Argentina went on to win 3-1 after extra time.

Another incident saw USA captain Tim Ream's yellow card for a foul on Miguel Almiron overturned, with Almiron instead booked for simulation. Both cases highlighted the controversial new power given to VAR officials.
