Why Donald Trump has avoided World Cup matches as US co-host
US president yet to attend a game despite co-hosting and praising tournament

United States president Donald Trump has not attended a single World Cup match so far, despite the country co-hosting the tournament and his administration hailing its success. Trump was widely expected to be a regular fixture at games, especially after he played a prominent role in the draw and received a FIFA award in December.
Trump praised the World Cup as 'the most successful they've ever had' and referenced the event in speeches, yet he skipped the US opening match against Paraguay on 12 June in Los Angeles. Secretary of state Mark Rubio attended in his place. Instead, Trump hosted a UFC event at the White House two days later.
What has Trump done so far?
Trump has maintained a close relationship with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who visited the Oval Office and Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence. At the draw in Washington D.C., Trump received FIFA's inaugural 'Peace Prize'. He has also been a visible presence at other major US sports events this year, including the Super Bowl and the Club World Cup final.
- Attended the World Cup draw in December 2025 and received a FIFA award
- Praised ticket sales and called the tournament a record success
- Hosted a UFC event on the White House lawn on 14 June
- Missed the US opener against Paraguay; sent secretary of state instead
- Has attended the Super Bowl, Club World Cup final, and Ryder Cup in 2025
How does this compare to past host leaders?
Host nation heads of state traditionally attend their country's opening match. In 1994, president Bill Clinton was present for the USA's first game at the previous US-hosted World Cup. Qatar's Emir attended the opening match in 2022. Trump's absence is notable given his high profile and the tournament's significance to the US.
The US team has advanced to the knockout stage after winning two of three group games, which might increase pressure on Trump to appear. However, no public schedule has been announced, and it remains unclear if he will attend any match before the final on 16 July.
