Mbappe leads Messi in World Cup Golden Boot race before final
Kylian Mbappe's double in France's 6-4 third-place loss to England took him to 10 goals, two clear of Lionel Messi, who has Sunday's final to respond.

Kylian Mbappe's two goals in France's 6-4 defeat by England in the third-place play-off moved him two clear of Lionel Messi in the World Cup Golden Boot standings, with the Argentina captain still to play Sunday's final against Spain.
England finished third in a high-scoring play-off, with Bukayo Saka scoring a hat-trick. Mbappe's double took his tally for the tournament to 10, the highest single-edition return of this century.
How the Golden Boot stands
Mbappe leads on 10 goals, with Messi on eight ahead of the final. The two are level on four assists, which is the first tie-breaker should they finish level on goals; if they are still tied, the award goes to the player with the fewest minutes played.
- Mbappe: 10 goals, four assists, tournament complete
- Messi: eight goals, four assists, one match remaining
- Tie-breakers run goals, then assists, then fewest minutes played
- Mbappe is bidding to become the first player to win the Golden Boot twice
All-time record also in play
The pair are also contesting the World Cup's all-time scoring record. Mbappe now leads that list on 22 goals, with Messi one behind on 21 and a final still to come. Mbappe's 10 in this edition is the first double-figure haul at a men's World Cup since Gerd Muller in 1970; before this tournament only eight players had reached eight or more goals at a single finals.
Behind the leading two, Jude Bellingham's goal against France took him to seven, the most an Englishman has scored at a single World Cup, edging him ahead of Erling Haaland on assists. Harry Kane and France's Ousmane Dembele sit a goal further back.
Messi's final against Spain on Sunday will settle both the Golden Boot and the head-to-head record at the top of the all-time list, with Mbappe unable to add to his total and watching from the sidelines.
