Ireland seek first T20 World Cup win after 17 consecutive losses
Ireland captain Gaby Lewis aims to break 17-game losing streak in T20 World Cup opening against Scotland.

Ireland are preparing for their fifth appearance in the Women's T20 World Cup, but they have yet to win a single match in the tournament. Across four previous editions in 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2023, they have lost all 17 games and finished bottom of their group each time. After failing to qualify for the 2024 event, they return for the 2026 edition, which is being held in England.
Opening match against Scotland
Ireland begin their campaign against Scotland at Old Trafford on Saturday at 10:30 BST. Captain Gaby Lewis, who recovered from a quad injury to play in her fourth World Cup, acknowledged the pressure to end the winless run. "We've yet to have a win in a World Cup and that is a big thing that is hanging over us," she said. "We really want to push to do that and get a couple of wins."
- Ireland have lost all 17 T20 World Cup matches they have played.
- They missed the 2024 tournament after failing to qualify.
- Their opening fixture is against Scotland, who denied them a place in 2024.
- Ireland are in Group B alongside hosts England, holders New Zealand, West Indies, Sri Lanka, and Scotland.
Lewis said there was "major heartbreak" after Scotland's shock victory in the 2024 qualifiers. However, Ireland come into this tournament with confidence after a Tri-Nations series win at home, where they beat Pakistan and the West Indies. "The series was a great success, confidence is high," Lewis added. Ireland are ranked ninth in the world, while Scotland have added former England spinner Kirsty Gordon to their squad.
