Iran's World Cup Heartbreak: Unbeaten but Eliminated on Goal Difference
Iran went unbeaten but missed the knockout stage on goal difference after two late heartbreaks.

Iran's 2026 World Cup campaign ended in the cruellest fashion as they were eliminated on goal difference despite being unbeaten in the group stage. Amir Ghalenoei's side drew all three matches and came agonisingly close to reaching the last 32 for the first time.
After draws with New Zealand and Belgium, Iran needed a win against Egypt in Seattle to guarantee progression. They fell behind early but equalised through Ramin Rezaeian's smart finish. In second-half stoppage time, Shoja Khalilzadeh appeared to score the winner, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside by the narrowest of margins.
The 1-1 draw meant Iran had to rely on the result of the Algeria vs Austria match. A win for either side would send Iran through. Algeria led 2-1 with minutes to go, but Austria equalised in the 93rd minute to keep the score at 2-2. Then, with seconds remaining, Sasa Kalajdzic headed in to make it 3-3, crushing Iran's hopes once more.
How Iran Missed Out
- Iran finished third in Group H with three points from three draws.
- Goal difference: Iran 0, Senegal +1, Cape Verde +2 (second place).
- Khalilzadeh's disallowed goal was ruled offside by a matter of centimetres.
- Austria's 96th-minute equaliser against Algeria denied Iran qualification.
- Iran became the first team since 1966 to be eliminated unbeaten in a World Cup group.
For Iran, the wait for a first knockout-stage appearance continues. Despite their unbeaten record, fine margins and late drama conspired against them. The team will now shift focus to the Asian Cup, where they will hope to avoid more heartbreak.
