Teen sprint sensation Gout Gout out for season with hamstring tear
Australian sprinter Gout Gout will miss the rest of the year after sustaining a grade-three hamstring tear in training.

Australian sprint prodigy Gout Gout has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 season after tearing his left hamstring during a training session in Brisbane. The 18-year-old will miss the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, scheduled for August.
Gout, who had already opted out of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer to focus on the U20 event, revealed the severity of the injury on social media. An MRI confirmed a grade-three tear, which is a complete muscle rupture and typically requires three to six months or longer to heal.
Rising star's remarkable achievements
In April, Gout clocked 19.67 seconds to set a world U20 200m record at the Australian Athletics Championships, improving on Usain Bolt's 19.93 at the same age. He also claimed the national U20 100m title and made his senior Diamond League debut in Oslo in June, just weeks before the injury.
- Won silver in the 200m at the 2024 World U20 Championships aged 16
- Set world U20 200m record of 19.67s in April 2026
- Ran faster than Usain Bolt's equivalent age time
- Won U20 100m national title in 2026
- Made Diamond League debut at Bislett Games in June
Reaction and recovery plan
In an Instagram post, Gout expressed his disappointment but accepted the situation as part of athletics. 'My focus now will be on my rehab in the coming weeks and months and ensuring I come back in 2027 better and stronger and faster,' he wrote.
Athletics Australia issued a statement emphasizing that Gout has a long career ahead and that his recovery must take priority. 'Unfortunately injuries are part of the sport, and it is important that he takes the time to rehabilitate, recover and return when he is ready,' the governing body said.
The setback means Gout will now target a return in 2027, with the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics expected to be key milestones on his comeback path.
