Ethan Galbraith's £10m Stoke move among Swansea's biggest sales

The Northern Ireland international's reported fee places him alongside Joel Piroe and Ben Davies in the club's transfer history.

Ethan Galbraith's reported £10 million move from Swansea City to Stoke City has become one of the Swans' most significant sales in recent years, ranking as the joint-13th highest departure in club history alongside Joel Piroe and Ben Davies.

The 25-year-old Northern Ireland international joined Swansea from Leyton Orient for around £1.5 million last summer, meaning the club stands to make a profit in excess of £8 million after just one season at the Swansea.com Stadium. Galbraith started 36 matches in the 2025-26 campaign, accumulating 3,108 minutes and contributing four goals.

The move is also Swansea's second-largest sale to another Championship side, trailing only Piroe's transfer to Leeds United in 2023, which was initially worth £10 million and could rise to £12 million through promotion-related add-ons.

Context in Swansea's transfer history

  • Swansea's record sale remains Gylfi Sigurdsson's £45m move to Everton in 2017.
  • Wilfried Bony's £25m switch to Manchester City and Andre Ayew's £20.5m move to West Ham round out the top three.
  • The Galbraith deal is one of the few high-value departures since Swansea's relegation from the Premier League.
  • Compared to Welsh rivals Cardiff City, Swansea have consistently commanded larger fees, with Cardiff's highest sales being Mark McGuinness (£11.7m) and Steven Caulker (£10.8m).

Comparisons with Premier League-relegated clubs

While £10 million represents strong business for a Championship side, recent sales by relegated Premier League clubs highlight a growing financial gap. Southampton sold Mateus Fernandes to West Ham for around £35 million, and he is now reportedly moving to Tottenham Hotspur for £85 million — a figure that dwarfs the previous Championship record sale of Romeo Lavia to Chelsea for £62 million.

Nevertheless, Swansea's ability to turn a significant profit on Galbraith after just one season underscores the club's recruitment model, which has traditionally seen players sold at peak value — as with Oli McBurnie, Daniel James, and Joel Piroe before him.

Galbraith will now join Stoke City ahead of the 2026-27 Championship season as the Potters look to strengthen their squad for a promotion push.
