Chicago Bears relocation to Indiana '50-50' as Illinois senator pushes back
Illinois state senator claims the battle to keep the Bears is far from over despite Indiana's $1bn offer

The Chicago Bears' potential move from Illinois to Indiana remains uncertain, with an Illinois lawmaker calling the race a '50-50' split. The $8.2 billion NFL franchise has been exploring a cross-state relocation, but the deal is far from final.
Geotechnical surveys have begun around Wolf Lake in Hammond, Indiana, where three potential sites are being evaluated for a new $5 billion domed stadium and mixed-use entertainment district. The proposed facility would be located about 16 miles south of the Bears' current home, Soldier Field in Chicago.
Indiana's $1bn gamble draws scrutiny
Indiana Governor Mike Braun signed a bill earlier this year establishing a Northwest Indiana Stadium Authority to finance and build the stadium. The state has pledged $1 billion in public funding, to be raised through new taxes including a 1% increase on food and beverage taxes in Lake and Porter counties, a doubling of Lake County's hotel tax to 10%, and a 12% admissions tax on event tickets.
These tax hikes have faced resistance from local officials and residents. Professor Deborah Carroll from the University of Illinois-Chicago's Government Finance Research Center noted that the revenues depend on a full entertainment experience, but questions remain about whether the projections are realistic.
- Three potential sites near Wolf Lake are under geotechnical evaluation.
- Indiana's $1bn funding package relies on new food, hotel, and admissions taxes.
- Governor Braun described the negotiations as 'in the red zone' but not yet complete.
- Illinois state senator Sue Rezin considers the stadium search a 'close race'.
What's next
While the Bears have indicated they have 'exhausted every opportunity' to stay in Chicago, no site in Indiana has been officially named. Governor Braun cautioned that a deal is not done 'until you ink it.' The door remains open for Illinois to make a counter-offer, and the coming weeks will be critical in determining the franchise's future home.
